Domestic violence cases could rise further

A leading charity says Harrow's domestic violence figures could rise even higher over Christmas.

Domestic violence is on the increase in Harrow, with even more cases possible over the stressful Christmas period.

That is according to the National Centre for Domestic Violence, following reports in the Harrow Times that the number of cases in Harrow has increased by a quarter. The newspaper said 1270 had been reported this year, with the rise linked to the recession.

The charity supports victims of domestic violence by obtaining injunctions to prevent their partners from harming them further. Speaking to The HA1, CEO Steve Connor said that the rise in incidents in Harrow was in line with the rest of the country.

He said: “We have seen an increase in the number of reported cases of domestic abuse this year. This is partly because more people are coming forward to ask for help but the recession is also a factor.”

“40% of cases now refer to financial stress or strain and even if these are not the only reasons for the abuse, they may be aggravating factors. The financial stress may push people who are predisposed to violence over the edge.”

Rise

Police attending 999 calls to aid victims of domestic violence must now fill out a risk assessment form at the scene. Cases rated ‘High’ or ‘Very High’ are referred to a specialist domestic violence unit. This means that cases are being formally logged, which is also being put forward to explain the rise in domestic violence figures.

The charity has recruited extra volunteers to help with the Christmas and New Year period. Connor added: “Without a doubt, Christmas and New Year is our busiest time”

“Alcohol plays a part in this. People are also cooped up with their families and the recession may make going out and buying presents and food stressful.”

Connor says that people that are victims of domestic violence should remember that they are not alone. One in four women and one in six men will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives.

The National Centre for Domestic Violence treats male and female victims of domestic abuse in exactly the same way and can act quickly to put an end to violence.
