David Howell has confirmed that Dean Green has left Harrow Borough, just four days after making his debut for the club.

The striker signed after a trial spell at Earlsmead this summer, but Howell says both parties agreed with the decision to release the player.

Howell said: “My first choice pairing at the moment looks like being Troy (Hewitt) and Rocky (Baptiste), it looked like he would be playing a bit-part to them.

“That’s not going to help in giving him the fitness that he needs, which we agreed and I’ve released his registration.”

Aside from Green’s departure, the Boro’ boss has almost an entire squad to pick from for Saturday’s match at Cray Wanderers.

Warren Whitely and Ben Dyett have both recovered from injuries, however Lewis Cook is unavailable.

Nick Jupp is also set to keep his place in goal at the expense of Andray Baptiste.

Opponents Cray have endured a tough start to the new season with just one point from their first three matches.

However, Howell says he will not be underestimating Ian Jenkins’ side and expects to get a good game at Hayes Lane tomorrow.

“I just think at this stage it’s false to judge someone’s league position from three or four, even five matches,” he said.

“I know Cray are a good footballing, passing side and they’ve been unfortunate. You can’t be fooled by the position that they are in because they could easily turn round.”

Boro’ have also announced a match against a Barnet FC XI next Wednesday.

That match will be played at Earlsmead, a day after Boro’s Ryman League match against Lowestoft Town, to give unused squad and reserve team players some game time.

Gordon Bartlett says Wealdstone’s home match with Bury Town on Saturday could be a real treat for supporters.

Stones have won their last two home matches 3-0, while Bury arrive at Grosvenor Vale sitting levels on points with the early Premier Division leaders Sutton United.

The visitors have beaten Aveley, Maidstone and Tonbridge so far, before also claiming a credible draw at home to Kingstonian.

Bartlett said: “Even the reports we had last year said they were a good footballing side and deserved to go up.

“They’ve started well so the confidence will be sky high, but I believe there’s a bit of confidence in our side as well.”

The Stones boss has seen his side score six goals without conceding in their opening two home matches.

However, in-form striker Greg Ngoyi is rated doubtful for Saturday’s match after suffering a suspected concussion last weekend.

“He came to training last night (Thursday) and came through that ok,” said Bartlett. “He has got a hospital appointment this afternoon, so he’ll ring later once he knows a bit more.”

Wealdstone have also announced ticket discounts for supporters of Watford and QPR as part of the Non-League Day campaign.

You can find out more about that by clicking here. Stones match with Bury Town kicks off at 3pm.

National Lottery organisers Camelot have revealed someone in Brent won £134,847 last month, but have not yet come forward to collect the money.

They are now searching for the lucky owner of the ticket, which was bought in the borough for the Lotto draw on Saturday 14 August.

The winning numbers on that date were 5, 13, 17, 31, 42, 46 and the bonus ball with 4.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: “We’re urging everyone to check their old tickets again or look anywhere a missing ticket could be hiding.

“We have the champagne on ice and our fingers crossed that the lucky winner comes forward to claim their win.”

If no one comes forward with the winning ticket then the prize money, plus all the interest it has generated, will go to the Lottery’s Good Causes fund.

There is still plenty of time for the ticket to be found though, with Camelot giving the winner until February 4 2011 to come forward.

Plans to help millions of commuters cope with the first of a series of 24-hour Tube strikes have been unveiled.

Around 10,000 members of the RMT Union and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association are to walk out from 5pm on Monday in a protest against plans to axe 800 jobs at ticket offices.

The two unions had been meeting with Transport for London (TfL) this week to try and avoid the strike, but talks broke down on Thursday.

TfL say disruption is expected from the late afternoon on Monday and will last throughout Tuesday 7 September.

They have announced plans to run a hundred extra buses during the strike, along with making room for 10,000 more journeys on the River Thames.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “Londoners are a hardy bunch and I am sure a Tube strike will not deter us from getting around.

“The extra measures we have put in call for a team effort and people will need to consider buses, boats or bikes as an alternative to their usual journeys.”

TfL say disruption is likely on most services on the Tube but that they will seek to run as many services as possible.

Volunteers will also be working outside stations to advise commuters on the best way to continue their journeys.

Parking facilities are also going to be set up to provide easier access for cyclists, who are being encouraged to ride to work if possible.

Monday’s strike is the first of four that have been announced by the two unions, who are angry at plans to cut ticket office jobs at stations.

It will be followed up by further industrial action on October 3, November 2 and November 28 if the two sides cannot reach an agreement.

Unions claim the plans to reduce staffing levels will compromise the safety of both passengers and Tube workers, and have called on TfL to change their minds.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: “Not only are ticket offices and ticket staff jobs threatened but hundreds of other station staff posts are also on the line.

“It was the presence of those very staff that averted potential disaster in recent incidents involving fires at Euston and Oxford Circus.”

TfL say the proposed changes are due to a huge increase in the number of people using Oyster cards rather than buying tickets.

They say one in twenty journeys is now paid for on the Oyster system, with some ticket offices selling less than ten tickets an hour.

Transport Commissioner Peter Hendy said: “We regret that Londoners will be disrupted if the strike goes ahead, however the RMT and TSSA leadership will not stop London Underground from moving with the times.

“We urge everyone travelling in and around London during the strike to check before you travel and to consider the wide range of alternative travel options by going to http://www.tfl.gov.uk as well as staggering your normal journeys where possible.”

Five people have been arrested in a series of dawn raids to combat street robbery in Harrow.

Officers from Operation Chappell moved in on addresses in Rayners Lane, Harrow Weald and Burnt Oak on Thursday morning.

The operation has been organised to reduce burglary and street robbery offences, with a rise in chain snatches and high value Indian gold jewellery reported across the borough.

Police say the addresses were targeted following work between them and pawnbrokers and gold buying businesses.

Three males were arrested on suspicion of robbery, with another person arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

Officers also took another person into custody on suspicion of criminal damage and assaulting a police officer.

“Today’s operation went extremely well,” said PC Richard Taylor. “We will continue to work closely with the gold buyers and pawnbrokers on the borough and to make Harrow a hostile environment for street criminals.

“We are telling people to cover their jewellery if they are in a public place, to be aware of who is around.

“If someone does try to grab your jewellery or bag, you should let it go rather than fighting to keep it.”

Harrow Borough and Wealdstone have given their support to a national initiative this weekend to get more fans going to non-league matches.

September 4 has been christened Non-League Football Day, as England’s match on Friday night means there are no Premier League or Championship games on Saturday.

QPR and Harrow Borough fan James Doe came up with the idea after spotting the break in the fixture list.

James said: “I thought it would be a good day to try and get fans of the big clubs to come and sample some football at their non-league club instead.

“I’ve launched Facebook and Twitter campaigns which have both had encouraging starts with clubs, supporters and media organizations from around the world having already signed up.”

Wealdstone play Bury Town on Saturday at Grosvenor Vale and have announced a ticket discount to support the initiative.

Supporters will be able to get into the match for just £5 if they show a valid season ticket for another club, with Stones extending particular welcomes to QPR and Watford fans from the Ruislip area.

Harrow Borough are away at Cray Wanderers on Saturday, but will also offer discounts at their match on Tuesday night at Earlsmead.

Adults will be able to get into the Lowestoft game for £5 with a valid season ticket for QPR or another Football League club.

Accompanied children will also be able to watch the match for just £1.

New publicity shots were released on Thursday showing Tasmin alongside main presenters Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley.

Speaking about her new role, Tasmin said she was “thrilled” to be part of the programme’s launch team.

“For me the most exciting thing about the job is working as a serious news presenter with a proven and innovative team of broadcasters headed up, of course, by Adrian, Christine and Lorraine.”

Tasmin grew up in Hendon before going on to read the news on Zee TV, PTV, Channel Five and the BBC.

Her last role involved presenting nightly bulletins on BBC Three, meaning a big change in her working hours when Daybreak begins.

She added: “The biggest challenge, of course, will be the early starts which will take a bit of getting used to both socially and professionally!

“But even the prospect of the 3.30am alarm didn’t give me a moment of doubt that this was the right move after three fabulous years at the BBC. Now I can’t wait to get started.”

Daybreak begins on Monday 6 September on ITV1 at 6am.

London Fire Brigade says a fire in a Wembley house this week was a clear example of the importance of fitting smoke alarms.

Four people escaped unhurt from the fire in Tokyngton Avenue on Tuesday night, although one had to be treated for the effects of breathing in smoke.

Flames broke out on the first floor of the house and also damaged part of the roof.

20 firefighters were called out to tackle the fire shortly before 11pm, with an investigation now underway into the cause.

LFB’s Wembley Crew Manager, Stuart Smith, said the occupants were alerted by their smoke alarms.

He said: “This gave the occupiers an early warning and enough time to escape the fire uninjured. They only cost a fiver and are easy to fit.

“We can even fit them for you, all you need to do is arrange a home fire safety visit by calling us for free on 0800 028 44 28.”

Brent North MP Barry Gardiner has called on the Labour Party to look to the future following the release of Tony Blair’s memoirs.

Mr Blair has called Gordon Brown “maddening” in his book, A Journey, saying he knew his former Chancellor would be a “disaster” as Prime Minister.

Lord Prescott warned on Wednesday that divisions between supporters of the two men could potentially have a damaging long-term effect on getting back into power.

However Mr Gardiner says the focus should be on the candidates involved in Labour’s current leadership contest.

“Clearly everybody knows that the relationship between Blair and Brown was not a great one,” said Mr Gardiner. “The important thing is to focus on the politics of the future, not the politics that were going on five or ten years ago.”

Voting in the leadership contest was opened up to Labour Party members on Wednesday.

David Miliband, Ed Miliband, Ed Balls and Diane Abbott are all hoping to take over as party leader, with the result due to be announced on September 25.

Mr Gardiner said: “The challenge for the party is to elect a new leader that is going to face the problems that the country is going to face in the future.

“It’s about having a vision of a fairer society that we want to see, a greater equality in society and not losing that need to recognise and reward aspiration and hard work.”

An appeal has been launched in Harrow to raise £50,000 for victims of the Pakistan flood crisis.

The money will go towards building new homes for some of the poorest families hit by the floods, which have killed over 1,600 people.

Another 20 million people have been affected by the disaster, following the heaviest monsoon in 80 years.

Mohammed Rahman, from the Appeal team, told The HA1: “What we’re really interested in is people just getting involved, not just from the Muslim or Pakistani community.

“Everybody’s contributed very generously to the larger organisation. Everybody’s got an affinity it seems with what’s happening out there.”

The Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Asad Omar, is also backing the appeal, with a team set to travel to Pakistan to find families that are most in need of help.

They will then use the money raised from Harrow to build 10 new brick houses for people who have lost their homes.

The response in Harrow has been so great that the team have already raised £10,000 to go towards their final target.

Mr Rahman added: “Lots of the aid agencies are building emergency shelters, but this is about a long term solution.

“Something which hopefully stands environmental damage, stand up to an earthquake, a house that will hopefully last a lifetime.”

People wanting to get involved will be able to donate money through the appeal website – www.harrowfloodappeal.org.uk – from the start of next week.

Cash donations or cheques can also be left at the Mayor’s office at the Civic Centre on Station Road.

The Appeal team say none of the money donated will be taken out to pay for volunteers, with every penny going towards the building work in Pakistan.
